3D Paint Chip Art

A couple weeks ago, while subbing at the child care center, I spotted some 3D folded paper art and decided I had to try it with my boys. We changed it up a little bit, using paint chips instead of construction paper. The thickness of paint chips hold shapes better and all the colors add to the fun.

Our Supplies:

construction paper, tacky glue, scissors, paint chips

Step 1: cut paint chips into strips

Step 2: zigzag/accordion fold strips (this is optional, we left some pieces unfolded and used them to make arches)

the accordion folds are a lot of fun on their own

this was a great fine motor exercise - it took mini man
a while to catch on but he finally got the hang of it

Step 3: put a drop of glue on both ends of your strips

Step 4: place strips in desired positions

 Our finished work:

mini man's

big buddy's

This activity was a lot of fun and is defiantly one we will do again - I think it would be a great addition to our Dr. Seuss unit. The boys liked that it was an open-ended activity and that they got to use glue. I liked that their fine motor skills got a workout.

  1. what a simple yet great idea

would love it if you share this on my link party that runs from Saturday -till Thursday @ www.serenityyou.blogspot.com

  2. What a great craft, thanks for sharing!
We nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award, check it out here: http://brilliantlikefireflies.blogspot.ca/2012/07/versatile-blogger-award.html

  3. I love little projects like these for my daughters. They are very simple to get them to complete the activities on their own and the open ended nature adds to the fun. I have seen intricate crafts with paint chips which wouldn't fly in my house for various reasons. But this one is so doable with my girls.

  4. Wow, how lovely! A great way to use all those amazing colours.
Thanks for sharing on Kids Get Crafty!

  5. That is a fun project. It is fun that it is three dimensional. Please stop by and link this post (and any other arts, crafts and play posts) to Artsy Play Wednesday on Capri + 3. The weekly linky is currently open.
