Christmas Shopping and a Giveaway

Christmas shopping season is officially in full swing. Husbandie and I ventured out a little bit Friday evening (I wasn't up to facing Black Friday morning crowds) and we were able to knock a couple items off our list but we still have a ways to go before we are done.

One of the stores I always visit for Christmas presents is Kohl's. They have something for everyone so it's easy to cross a bunch of people (children, nieces, sisters, brothers, parents, etc) off my list in one stop. They also have some pretty great deals which makes staying in our Christmas budget a little easier.

About a week ago Kohl's contacted me about a new tool they've added to their online toy department. The tool allows you to browse toys by age. I've played around with it some; it's very easy to use and is full of great toy suggestions. Here are a few of my favorites picks for my own kids, as well as for my nieces and little brother.

1) wood marble maze, 2) band in a box (i'd split it up into stockings), 3) car carrier
4) playmobil dressage course, 5) razor ripstik, 6) mega blocks castle,
 7) imaginext castle, 8) wooden castle blocks, 9) marshmallow raider
10) shape sorter
*we are obviously going through a bit of a castle obsession at our house

Now for the giveaway! Kohl's has generously given me one $50 Kohl's gift card to giveaway to a Joyfully Weary reader. Want to win? Click below for details on how to enter.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

*total transparency: kohl's has generously provided me with this gift card at no cost. i am, however, receiving no compensation from kohl's for hosting this giveaway. as always all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Paint Chip Word Families

We haven't been doing a ton of school work this summer but we have tried to fit in a little reading practice everyday. We are currently working our way through Bob Books and The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading - I  highly recommend both. I saw this idea for paint chip word families on Pinterest several months ago and knew it would be one we'd have to try. I changed it up a little bit so that the the strips pulled through the word family cards.

My supplies: large white paint chips, various colors of paint chips, sharpie, scissors, and an x-acto knife
Step 1: Because my colored paint chips were so wide I folded and cut them in half.

Step 2: In the center of the white paint-chip, use the x-acto knife to cut two openings, at the top and bottom of the white square, the width of the color strip.

Step 3: Use the sharpie to write letters on paint chips (a list of word families can be found here
Step 4: Pull strip through word family card

 Step 5: Have fun readi…

A Visit to Nashville

Last weekend Jeremy and I took a quick trip to Nashville. We left the kids at home with Maca so it was a great mini vacation. We took overnight Mega buses there and back which was perfect except for one young man who needed convincing that, despite how expensive his headphones were, or how amazing his jams may be, nobody else wants to hear them at 2am. I may have not handle that situation in the most graceful manner.
We got to Nashville Friday morning and after cleaning up a bit we went to Marche's in East Nashville for brunch and then explored the downtown.

Friday night we had some crazy good food at an acclaimed local restaurant City House - the building is also very impressive.

Saturday morning was my favorite part of the whole trip. Our friend Joni took us to a hiking trail where we marveled at Tennessee's beauty and enjoyed the almost 70 degree weather.

The rest of Saturday was spent exploring Nashville neighborhoods and indulging in a bit of shopping and delicious f…

Preschool Syllabus: Farms

We started a new homeschool unit this week: farms. With all our harvest activities it seemed like a natural choice.  This last weekend we attended a neighboring town's scarecrow festival and we plan to go to a pumpkin farm with a barnyard petting zoo in the next couple weeks. We will focus on this unit for the rest of October.

During our rug times the boys and I will be singing a lot of farm related songs (Counting Coconuts has complied a great list) and make our way through the mass of books I checked out from the library.  I won't overwhelm you with a picture of them all but I will recommend a couple. For fiction Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin and Gossie by Olivier Dunrea.  Both of these books have a nice rhythm, great pictures, and sweet humor. We actually own them and several others by these authors - they are some of the most read books in our collection.  For nonfiction, 21st Century Junior Library has published several great farm-themed books.
