Little Lady's Bedroom

I've had a couple readers asks me to do a post on Little Lady's bedroom. I put it off because it's not quite finished; I'd had hoped to add a rug and spruce up a few things. But we are getting the boys bunk beds for Christmas so in just a few short days she'll be inheriting one of their toddler beds and her room will change a little bit.

Even though I've never considered her room "finished" I love it. When we got pregnant with Little Lady we didn't have extra money in our budget for decorating a nursery but I really wanted a pretty space for my little girl. God provided in some amazing ways. Including paint and everything we've spent around $170 on her room and a large portion of that was an unexpected baby gift from a relative. Our big splurge was fabric; I fell in love with Timeless Treasures' Perch collection. With it my mother-in-law (aka Maca) created crib sheets, a dust ruffle, curtains, pillows, and stuffed birds. My sewing skills are very limited, but you'll see in the pictures below that I still came up with a couple uses for the fabric scraps. I purchased a few other treasures on clearance or at garage sales but everything else is a hand-me-down of some sort.

The boys found the stick for the bird mobile, Maca sewed the birds, and I hot glued everything in to place. The crib and the dresser were hand-me-downs; I had plans to paint them but never found the time...#momlife

Jeremy made the shelved from scrap wood and Ikea braces. The blanket on the chair was my baby blanket.
I found the framed poster at a garage sale. The piggy bank is an hand-me-down from Big Buddy. The fabric covered boxes are ones I made (details here) and the lights are a target clearance find.
The embroidery hoops were a fun find; I had asked for some on freecycle thinking I could possibly get a few cheap wooden ones and ended up with a dozen vintage metal hoops!
I found these cute little knobs on clearance at Anthropologie.
This bird cage is a hand-me-down from Maca; she purchased in Spain over 30 years ago.
I made this name sign from scrap wood,  pretty papers, Mod Podge, ribbon, and a few staples.
Little Lady enjoying her shoe collection. She is not even two yet and already her bedroom floor is usually covered in shoes and clothes

Hope you enjoyed this little tour. I am setting a goal for myself to post some pictures of kids room after we switch up their beds. Maybe it will inspire me to declare the rooms "finished" sooner rather than later.

A Little Red Cardboard Barn

We've finished our farm unit and are moving on to a new theme tomorrow - but before we do I wanted share the barn we made. The wooden farm animals came with a beautiful handmade ark that we gave Big Buddy for Christmas a couple years ago.  I would someday love to have a wood barn but it's currently not in the budget. So in the mean time we decided to improvise and make our own.  I stumbled upon this perfectly sized milk box (4 gallons per box) while subbing and thought it would be sturdy enough to handle play. Hubandie and the boys used an x-acto knife and wood glue to build a barn shape. to get the doors to fold out hubandie used an x-acto knife and scored the inside of the cardboard We then painted with a basic primer and outlined a window and a door with painters tape. cardboard is very porous so priming is a must if you want decent coverage Big Buddy however insisted that we add more windows so it looked like the barn in our book The Big

Preschool Syllabus: Dr. Seuss

Normally I'd do a Dr. Seuss unit in March around his birthday. We had to do one now though because on Saturday Big Buddy and I going on a date to a  Dr. Seuss exhibit . The exhibit is only at the museum until January and I'm afraid if we don't go now we might not get the chance. We are of course reading lots of Dr. Seuss's books. A great advatage to studying Dr. Seuss in November rather than March is that all his books were available at the library. I also found a great children's biography which is perfect for preschoolers. Pebble First Biographies: Dr. Seuss  We've read it a couple times and Big Buddy loves reciting all the facts he's learned WRITING CENTER ADDITIONS big buddy's name in sand paper letters, coloring pages  & mazes from seussville.com skills practiced: fine motor, letter recognition, creativity,  reading comprehension LEARNING "TRAYS" -   I rotate these, setting out about four a day from which the boy&#

Jack-O-Lanterns on the Fridge

Last fall I saw the idea for refrigerator pumpkins with face pieces in FamilyFun Magazine  and have been anxious to recreate them ever since. It was pretty quick and easy and since the only thing we didn't have on hand was magnetic sheets ($1.50 with coupon at Joann's) it was also very cheap. my supplies: magnetic sheets, orange & black construction paper, white pen, tacky glue *i know they have self adhesive sheets but my Joann's didn't carry them   glued (very messily) and ready to cut Both the boys were quite enthused when they discovered them after rest time :) Hopefully it will keep them entertained until we carve real pumpkins.
